| INTRODUCTION
The
National Museum, Calabar is one of the thirty two
out posts of the National Commission for Museums
and Monuments located across the country. The National
Commission for Museums and Monuments (NCMM) is the
Commission charged with the development and maintenance
of museums in Nigeria. The Headquarters is in Abuja
at Plot 2018 Cotonou Crescent, Wuse Zone 6.
The NCMM came in 1977 to replace the defunct Federal
Department of Antiquities that was charged with
the responsibilities of administering museums in
Nigeria from 1943.
The outposts are Lagos, Jos, Kaduna, Kano, Ibadan,
Benin City, Umuahia, Aba, Port Harcourt, Oron, Uyo,
Asaba, Esie, Ilorin, Lokoja, Yola, Maiduguri, Katsina,
Sokoto, Nok, Makurdi, Minna, Osogbo, Ile Ife, Akure,
Owo, Abeokuta, Owerri, Koko, Enugu and Igbo Ukwu.
MISSION STATEMENT
Our mandate is to collect,
document, conserve and interpret materials evidence
of the cultural, historical and environmental heritage
of the people of the Cross River for the education
and enjoyment of all.
