INTRODUCTION
The Commission is a body, established on the basis of the former Nigeria
Department of Antiquities, through the Enabling Act of 28th September, 1979,
and which has its functions specified in Part I, paragraph 3(1) and (2) of the Act, as follows:
(a) To administer national museums, antiquities, monuments and sites;
(b) To establish and maintain national museums, monuments, sites and other outlets for, or, in connection with, but not restricted only to, the following:
(i) Antiquities
(ii) Sciences and Technology
(iii) Warfare
(iv) African, Black and other antiquities
(v) Arts and Crafts
(vi) Architecture
(vii) Natural History
(viii) Educational Services
(ix) Heritage and Sites
(c) To make recommendations concerning the establishment and management of museums, heritage and sites, the preservation of antiquities and monuments, and their declaration as national landmarks.
(d) To approve or withdraw such approval for any privately established and maintained museum.

…a stable museum system, which ensures the preservation and integration of the Nigerian cultural and natural heritage within the local and national developmental process and the world heritage network.

…the systematic collection, preservation, study and interpretation of the material evidence (tangible and intangible) of the development of the peoples of Nigeria and Nigerians in the Diaspora.

NCMM GETS A NEW BOSS
The National Commission for Museums and Monuements (NCMM) , gets a new Director General Mr. Usman Abdallah Yusuf.
The appointment which was confirmed, Thursday, in Abuja by the Acting Director General of the agency, Mr. O.A.S Alasan has taken immediate effect. The new DG has taken over from Mr. Alasan who was appointed as the acting director following the retirement of the former DG, Mr. Joseph Eborieme, September this year.
Mr. Usman Abdallah Yusuf before his appointment was the Director, Monuments, Heritage and Sites department and had also had a brief stint as the acting Director-General of the said commission.
Mr. Usman Abdallah Yusuf was born in Kano, Nigeria. Married with children, he attended the prestigious Ahmadu Bello University (ABU), Zaria, where he bagged several degrees in Political Science (B.SC) 1983, M.Sc Political Science 1999, PhD (In-view) Cultural Resource Management 2006 to Date.
Yusuf also has a PGD in Museulogy from the Institute of Archaeology and Museum Studies, Jos 1998.
Having attended a Pre-Senior Executive Course in Policy, Strategic and Leadership Studies at The National Institute for Policy and Strategic Studies, Kuru, and also has a PGD in Journalism from the Nigerian Institute of Journalism, Lagos (1987).
Yusuf has worked at various levels as a Director, Chief Researcher and Curator, National Museum Kano. He was also a Reporter, Writer and Features Editor, Triumph Publishing Company, Kano.
He is also a UNESCO Resource Person on Heritage Conservation and Preservation matters. He is also a Member, Swedish African Museum Project (SAMP), African World Heritage Fund (AWHF), National Institute of Public Relations (NIPR).
Mr. Usman also has several publications to his credit like "Museums in the Service of Society, The Case of Gidan Makama Museum,Dala Historical Site and Sankowa versus Elephant Power" among others.
