Brief:
The Museum was established as a Museum of National Unity in 1989. It is
located within the premises of the old Baptist Women’s College,
Idi Aba.The Baptist Women’s College was established by the Baptist
Mission in Nigeria to give women missionary education in Western Nigeria.
The premier building of the institution was offered to the Commission
to use as a base for the development of a Museum in Abeokuta, Ogun state
in 1989.
Opened to the public in 2002 with a photographic exhibition on Treasures
of Ancient Nigeria.
The museum oversees the Sugbo Eredo, site of the famous Birikisu Sungbo
shrineat Oke-Eri, a few kilometres from Ijebu Ode. It is also a base for
archaeological investigations of the famous Olumo Rock, presently being
reconstructed as a tourist centre.
