The museum is housed on the premises of Old Katsina Training College, which was premier education institution in Northern Nigeria established in 1921 and declared an ancient Hiistorical Monument and a National Museum in 1989. It houses archaeological materials (mainly potsherds) from different areas of the state.
Near-by is the famous 14th century Gobirau Minaret, a National Monument and a striking example of the indigenous earth architecture. It was the highest building in the ancient city and its environs and was used as the first Central Mosque in Katsina and a defense surveillance tower.
