DECLARED MONUMENTS IN NIGERIA
Rock Painting Shira in Azare:
These rock paintings were first reported in 1959. Mallam Garba, a local
farmer has since located ten sites with rock-gongs in the ring of hills
around Shira. Of the ten sites, nine have stylised, anthropomorphic figures
painted in red, probably with finger, on the underside of large mushroom-shape
boulders.
These boulders are propped up by a natural formation on smaller rocks.
Many of which show signs of use as rock gongs.
It is believed that the paintings were done by normads, although the
present local population claim to know nothing about them. The tenth site
is in a rock shelter, consists of several red paintings of cows and calves.
Declaration:
Declared Ancient Monument on 5th of August, 1964. The land covering a
radius of 300feet of the centre of each site. There are ten different
sites containing Rock paintings.
