DECLARED MONUMENTS IN NIGERIA
First Mining Beacon at Tulden Fulani:
The beacon which had been overgrown and forgotten was re-discovered at
the end of 1955 when the plateau was celebrating the fiftieth anniversary
of arrival on Christmas Eve 1903 of the first expedition into the closed
country of the high Plateau; closed, that is to the Fulani and other people
who had been at war with the Hill Pagans for as long as anyone could remember,
and to the Europeans who were identified with them.
The beacon was set up by Late Lt. Colonel Henry William Law C.M.G.D.S.O
on 19th September, 1905 accompanied by his assistants, R. A Archbold and
S.W. Carpanter.
It was built of burnt brick with a cement rendering and bears the initials
of the three men, the name of the mining company, the Niger Company and
the date 1905.
Declaration:
Declared Monument on 16th February, 1956 together with the land within
a radius of one hundred feet.
