AKANBIEMU RETURNS AS NCMM SPORTS CHAIRMAN

The National Commission for Museums and Monuments sports club recently held elections into various positions to kick start the activities for the year 2011 sports calendar.

The electoral committee which was inaugurated onthe 4th of March, 2011, had Mr. Lateed Adedeji Bello as the Chairman and Mrs. Rukaiyat Tajudeen serving as Secretary, came out with different elective positions from the Chairman who also doubles as the Team Manager, Secretary, Assistant Team Manager, Financial Secretary, Welfare Officer and the Treasurer.

Prior to the election was the day of manifesto; all contestants had the opportunity to say how they intend to take the NCMM sports to the next level to the admiration of all staff that trooped out to listen to all that they had to say.

Election day proper brought all the excitement and tension from all the candidates, having closed campaigns and leaving all to the hands of the electorates. The well coordinated and organized election had Mr. Thaddeus Zyi as a representaive of the Management assisted by Mr. Sunday Nwajuabe and Mr. Ben Ogbeide of the Departments of Administration and Supplies and Audit Unit respectively.

Contestants for the various positions were announced by Comrade Lateef Adedeji Bello, the electoral Chairman, for the post of the Chairman/Team Manager were Mr. Jonathan Akanbiemu and Mr. Keneth Akueme, for the position of the Assistant Team Manager were Mr. Judeson Okeke and Mrs. Grace Wakawa, Mr. Samuel Bakari contested for the position of the Secretary (unopposed) while Mr. Dennis TOmbia who seeks to return as financial secretary slugged it out with Mr. John Otu for the Financial Secretary post, the welfare officer had Miss Amaka Oputa and Mr. Lawal Tajudeen while Miss Abimeji B. Iyaji and Mr. Henry Ogazi battled for the position of the Treasurer. One hundred and ninety-two (192) voters were accredited to excercise their rights in a keenly contested election, anxieties were high, tension mounted while votes were counted by the electoral committee chairman in the presence of their agents. At 2.36pm, the following contestants emerged as winners:

  1. Chairman/Team Manager - MR. AKANBIEMU JONATHAN
  2. Assistant Team Manager - MR. JUDESON OKEKE
  3. Secretary - MR. SAMUEL BAKARI
  4. Financial Secretary - MR. DENNIS TOMBIA
  5. Welfare Officer - MISS. AMAKA OPUTA
  6. Treasurer - ABIMEJI B. IYAJI

In his acceptance speech after they had all been sworn in, Mr. Akanbiemu who returned as the Chairman thanked the electoral committee for a well organised election, and also expressed his mind on the joy and beauty of democracy, he blessed the name of God on how everything had been so well organised. He promised to continue from where he had stopped, and the need to carry every one along by working in close relation with elected executives and non-executives.

Akanbiemu in summary stated further that he never saw the election as a do-or-die affair, that his return as the Chairman is a victory for democracy and a victory for honesty, he said he is ready to work with any one who makes him or herself available, and delcared that training will start any moment, so all sports club members must be ready to embrace the new challenges.
