The museum was established to house the archaeological materials from the Nok culture in the area, where that culture was first discovered. A camp was maintained at the village of Nok for the purpose of collecting the accidental finds after the discovery of terracotta sculptures there by Bernard Fagg in 1944. In 1949 the Federal Government acquired 8.4 acres of land in Nok for protection of the site as well as archaeological research purposes.
Archaeological Museum Centre was established there 1990, closed down in 1993 and re-opened in October 2003. It is administered through National Museum, Kaduna and has a temporary display of Nok terracotta objects.
Nearby are several caves with ancient habitation, human remains, granaries, hearths and some clay pipes. Some also contained stone sculpture and others - beautiful stalagmite and stalactite structures. The caves served as hideouts to the local population during the inter-tribal wars.
