DECLARED MONUMENTS IN NIGERIA
King Jaja's Statue Opobo:
King Douglas Jaja, the first was one of the Chiefs from the Opobo section
on Bonny who founded Opobo town, a position which he held until he departed
in 1887.
After spending three years in the West Indies, he was granted a royal
pardon but died on his way home at Teneriffe on 7th July, 1891.
He was buried in Opobo. The statute was made in England and erected in
1907, the expense being borne by the Opobo Chief and by some of king Jaja's
European friends.
Declaration:
Declared Monument on 14th August, 1959 and the land lying within a radius
of 100ft thereof.
