Chief Okoroji's House, Arochukwu:
Very few Aro building survived from the last century, but the few that still exist present a highly developed constructional skill, with beautifully formed facades, details and decorations. The chief Okoroji who built this house, probably at the time of his prosperity in the 1880's died before the Aro expedition.

The plan of the house is simply an inner room and an outer veranda (along one wall of the room) and the most striking features of the buildings are its height (it is built on a plinth) and the length of its roof in the front.

The house has a very interesting veranda, has low carved and mud benches, a pair of slave chains hang from the ceiling and the rafters are ornamented with rows of animal skulls tied with decorative can buildings. The inner room is even, more impressive, being almost pitch dark and crowded with family brooms.

The centre piece of the room is a shrine made of a pik of fine large coiled manillas (with flattened ends) and crowned with a ships bell. Around the walls are rows of china plates, serving dishes and covers, and pewter dishes and bowls. There is a profusion of pewter and china mugs, beakers and tankards. The ceiling of the room is hung with a variety of lanterns and ship's lights and other bric-a-brac. Else-where in the room there are a few cannons, swords and guns.

All of these miscellaneous European article appear to be late nineteen century English or German trade goods and souvenirs. There are some brass spiral manillas, very good specimens of a rare type. There are represented on wood carvings in the area by a fluted design.
