It was a beehive of cultural activity at Cyprain
Ekwensi Centre for Arts and Culture, Abuja on Wednesday, May18,
2011, a date set aside by International Council of Museums (ICOM)
to makr International Museums Day, a global cultural event. This
year's theme is "MUSEUM AND MEMORY".
Speaking at the event, the Director-General of
National Commission for Museums and Monuments (NCMM) Mallam Yusuf
Abdallah Usman said every human being is a museum of their own with
memories to keep and stories to tell. The Museum Chief Executive
added that the occasion is all about the rediscovery of our individual
and collective memory as a people. In a compendium, he informed
the gathering of the Commission's giant stride to repatriate some
of Nigeria's stolen artefacts and efforts being made to get back
more of these cultural objects.
The Minister of Tourism, Culture and National Orientation
Alhaji Abubakar Sadiq Mohammed, was represented by Mrs. Sola Olumeko,
Director of the Federal Ministry of Tourism and National Orientation.
The Minister disclosed in his address that without memory, there
can be no meaningful development and reminded the gatehrign taht
Nigeria has a lot to celebrate in terms of its growth, creativity
and achievement anchored on eight thousand year os Nigeria art.
He applauded the place of the Museum in the society, as the collection
centre of heritage materials, the key tomemory.
Guests at the event include Grace Isue Gekpe, Dr.
Barclays Ayakoroma, DG NICO, Titus Akusu, Deputy Director, National
Gallery of Art, Alhaji Adamu Mohammed Bulkachuwa (Sarkin Bai of
Katagun) and many others.
Highlights of the occasion includes a drama titled
"CRISIS OF IDENTITY". It aroused laughter and invoked
retrospection into areas of our unity in diversity; the stage play
was directed by Tony Shittu with Tony Adejo as stage manager. The
drama piece which was put together by Anchor Production, Abuja was
quite entertaining.
There was a pictorial exhibition to showcase the
nation's rich cultural collections as objects to speak for us, particularly,
as a people, we are living memories and memorials over time.
