MUSEUMS BRIEF There are 36 National museums, 63 national monuments and 2 UNESCO world heritage sites scattered across Nigeria which are opened to the public. The 1953 antiquities ordinance gave birth to the establishment of Museums in Esie (1945), Ife (1954), Lagos (1957), Owo (1958), Benin and Oron (1960). After the Nigerian civil war, the Federal Government in quest of lasting unity created museums of National Unity which include Enugu and Ibadan.
