DECLARED MONUMENTS IN NIGERIA
Old Iga Building In Iga Idunganran, Lagos:
The Oba of Lagos lives in a modern building constructed in1959 as an extension
to the oldest remaining parts of the traditional palace which is said
to date from the reign of Oba Akinsemoyin (C. 1704-20), for whom it was
built by the Portuguses in return for trading rights in Lagos.
The old Iga is constructed according to the traditional plan wide spread
of impluvia, the internal design of which is in the particular style of
Benin architecture. While the Portuguese may in fact have financed the
building, it is clear that they did not interfere with traditional building
methods, except perhaps to provide pottery roofing tiles. These are said
to have been used as a fire protection although they have long since been
replaced by corrugated iron sheeting.
Of the old building three impluvia and some adjoining room remain each,
except for the throne room containing tombs of deceased Obas.
Declaration:
Declared Historic Monument on 15th February, 1964.
