DECLARED MONUMENTS IN NIGERIA
Citiy Wall, Benin:
These are the most impressive City Walls in the Southern part of Nigeria.
At their highest point, the walls are 30 feet high and the ditch 30 feet
deep making total incline of 60 feet.
Unfortunately, in the past few years, the walls have been extensively
used as a source of building materials.
Declaration
Declared Monument on 1st June, 1961 (the site thereof, comprising the
land lying within fifty fet of the crest of the walls on the inside and
within hundred feet of the crest of the walls on the outside: provided
that all existing building sited within fifty feet of the crest of the
walls on the outside shall be deemed lawfully erected as long as they
exist).
