DECLARED MONUMENTS IN NIGERIA
The Water House at No. 12 Kakawa Street, Lagos:
The land formed part of a crown grant to Hijinio Pinta da Fonsacca in
1864 and the house must have been started shortly after this date. The
lower storey is thus thought to be nearly 90 years old. The upper storey
about 50 years.
This is one of the oldest houses remaining in Lagos and among the best
example of the Brazillain style of buildings. It is an exceptionally well
Proportioned building and contains fine iron work.The drinking water at
this house in years gone by; the name of the house is thus an interesting
link with the old history of Lagos.
This building is being considered for declaration as an ancient monument.
